Chris likes to say that he’s just a normal guy; a ‘Regular Joe’ facing the same life struggles as everyone else. The difference is that Chris is willing to throw himself over the ledge of an ocean wave (the size of a four story building), paddle unsupported for seven days (to treacherous coastlines – alone in extreme elements) or paddle across the Atlantic on a stand-up paddle board …
He won the Maverick’s Big Wave International surfing event in the biggest and heaviest waves ever recorded in the history of the sport and he has a string of other notable world-firsts under his belt.

The fact that he’s managed to achieve all this without ever having been a full time professional athlete just makes his story even more remarkable because just like you and I, Chris has had to work damn hard to pay the bills, running his own small business, while still trying to train and compete internationally in order to achieve his surfing and adventurer dreams.
To do so, Chris has always had to balance his raw talent and big wave ambitions with a healthy dose of realism. Unlike other sponsored professional athletes, Chris not only had to do the hard job of riding the most frightening waves on the planet but he’s also had to get to these far off destinations on his own dime; creating his own opportunities to ‘live the dream’.
This is not the story of a sponsored glory boy, given every opportunity to rise to the top of big wave surfing and ocean adventure sports but rather the tale of a young man with huge amounts of courage, focus, self-belief and a never-say-die optimism and a steely determination to achieve greatness, regardless of the odds that were stacked against him.
He won the Mavericks event against all odds in the biggest and most serious waves ever surfed in a competition and he has broken a string of world records, paddling on his stand-up paddle board to raise money for charities like the Cancer Association and the Lunchbox Fund – for which he is an Ambassador.
Chris has just recently returned from setting new world records in Europe – breaking the English Channels SUP record, as well as the Open Ocean 12 Hour Distance world record in South Africa.
Next year, he aims to be the first person to paddle a standup-paddle board across the Atlantic Ocean. Over the past five years, Chris has mastered the gift of telling his unique tales into a spell binding and awe-inspiring story and he has become both a motivational keynote speaker as well as a TEDx guest speaker, who travels the world inspiring audiences to believe that they too can achieve great things with the right attitude, self belied and focus; it’s just a matter of choice.
Chris has a motto that captures his attitude to both overcome struggles and achievements: “Dream it, see it, believe it, and achieve it!”
It’s that simple and he has proven time and again that if you truly believe in something and you set your sights on that goal – no matter how big – if you work hard at it, stay focused, determined, and resilient and never give up, you can achieve anything …
